Jericho’s leap of faith

Saturday October 27,2007 Philippine

http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/storypage.aspx?StoryId=97212

Pursuing a singing career meant a great sacrifice for Jericho Rosales. He had to bow out from acting, give up a number of TV and film projects, and decline other offers to allow him to explore his music.

After ruling the primetime block with memorable and widely followed teleseryes like Pangako sa 'Yo, Sana'y Wala Nang Wakas and the action-fantasy drama, Panday, he took a 10-month sabbatical from acting to concentrate on his music. First on the agenda was to launch an album, Loose Fit (with his band Jeans), containing all original songs which he wrote.

Then came the gigs - in music lounges, malls, the provinces and even abroad, from Sabah, Malaysia to Ghana, Africa - where Echo wowed the crowd as he performed his kind of music.

It has taken him a year to mount a major concert. He wanted to be ready. And what better time to do it than now, when he is celebrating his 10th year in show business. He cannot be thankful enough for every good thing that has come his way lately.

Raw Energy traces Echo's successful first decade in show business, from being an actor to a certified musical artist. From charming our hearts since the time he won in Eat, Bulaga!'s Mister Pogi, Echo soared to stardom and made a name for himself. He has gone a long way to become one of the most bankable actors in his generation.

He had to gather enough guts to be able to rule the stage and carry out a two-hour performance in the hope of not boring his audience. And when he did, Echo showed his fans he's already got what it takes to be called a concert artist.

Last Oct. 18 and 19, Echo staged a two-night concert at the Music Museum aptly called Raw Energy. More impressive was that he even shared directing credits with Gary Valenciano. In the concert's varied repertoire were the songs that Echo had always wanted to sing, from pop-jazz to alternative rock, funky and groovy hits of the '70s and '80s, present favorites and Jeans originals.

Opening up with Beautiful Day/Elevation, he rendered other tunes like How Sweet It Is To Be Loved, You're Beautiful, Ordinary People, Back To You, It Ain't Over, Englishman in New York, Get Down On It. He also dished out his original compositions from his album - Kasama Ka, Coming Out and Tuwing Nakikita Ka, the second single culled from Loose Fit.

Echo has always been experimental with the kind of songs he chooses to perform. While he would inject songs by Sting, Jamiroquai, U2 or John Mayer, he has likewise learned to include more popular tunes in his repertoire."

His visit to Ghana, Africa earlier this year was documented with several heartwarming photos flashed on the huge screen that dominated the stage, as he carried out his version of Toto's Africa.

Most applauded was Echo's medley of the soap operas he did – Esperanza, Pangako sa 'Yo, Sana'y Wala Nang Wakas, Makita Kang Muli (Panday) and Pangarap na Bituin. As footage of his past teleseryes were flashed onscreen, shrieks and screams from the fans were heard.

Among his special guests were Gabriel Valenciano, who displayed his flair for percussion, and rapper Carlos Agassi, who performed Night Sky with him.

Highlight of the concert was when Echo shared the stage with his mentor, concert director and musical influence, Gary Valenciano. "I look up to this man," says Echo of Gary. "When you stand beside him, it's an honor. When he speaks to you, it's another story. I am consistently awed by this man."

Together, the two rendered a medley of Stand By Me and Every Breath You Take, brilliantly arranged by Mon Faustino. The number elicited an encore that's why they also sang and danced to an old hit, Manila. Gary later had his own spot with his timeless hit, Sana Maulit Muli, where he also played the keyboards and the audience sang with him.

Music Museum is a venue conquered by seasoned entertainers. For someone who's been singing for only a year, Echo was undaunted. He was ready to mount the stage, perform his kind of music and entertain his audience.

"Piolo (Pascual) is a good singer, but Echo has a distinct voice," noted movie columnist and talent manager Aster Amoyo. "When Echo sings, you know it's him. He's good."

Today, Echo has been admirably juggling his time between singing and acting. He has returned to ABS-CBN's Primetime Bida slot with a new soap series, Pangarap na Bituin, featuring him with Sarah Geronimo as his leading lady, Rica Peralejo and even Heart Evangelista as his other love interest.

Among the corporate sponsors who supported the concert were Rustan's, PLDT, Belo Medical Group and AMA Learning Center, which gave P200,000 worth of scholarship to the Bicol scholarship fund through the beneficiary of the concert, Shining Light Foundation.

Echo has more places and perhaps bigger venues to conquer. As this review sees print, he is in Europe to perform in a Filipino-sponsored event. He knows he has a lot more to prove when it comes to singing, but being the true artist that he is, Echo is not afraid to take the risk. He looks forward to every live performance where he is always out to entertain and please his audience.

Mike He and Lee Wei's first time? Displays good cooking skills

Thursday, October 25, 2007 Taiwan

Translated by minivicki @ asianfanatics.net

Mike He and Lee Wei went on "Xing Nan Da Zhu Chu(show hosted by Chen Qiao En and Cheng Cheng)" to promote Bull Fighting and displayed their gentleman image.

Mike and Lee Wei's first time? Idol drama Bull fighting will be airing in mid-November and the main leads Mike He and Lee Wei specially went on Xing Nan Da Zhu Chu to promote the drama, giving out their first time going on cooking show and displaying their gentleman side. Mike said that he will only assist his mother occasionally and Lee Wei expressed that he has never been assistant and only opens his mouth and get people to cook. Lee Wei also said that in Bull Fighting, he had the chance to display his own cooking skills and put in effort into cooking "Sweet and Sour Fish" for the female lead Hebe. This could be counted as another display of his cooking skills.

Bull Fighing focuses on street basketball as background and is about a love story where couples have to be true to each other. The two male leads Mike and Lee Wei went on Xing Nan Da Zhu Chu(Manly Chef) which caused Cheng Cheng to happily say "Today's guest is really as it's suppose to be, manly. Totally fits the show's name!" Chen Qiao En was watching their entrance from the side and also jokingly said that "When the two of them entered, the whole atmosphere was reeking of handsomeness." With two manly guys in front of her, it was asked that isn't Ming Dao and Fan Zhi Wei handsome? Qiao En shylu said "Ok lar!", causing Cheng Cheng to quickly stop her and chided her for "Not appreciating what she has."

Because he's usually busy filming and has little time for learning to cook, both Mike and Lee Wei were really keen on learning this time. Lee Wei humourously said that "Actually, both of us practiced till 3,4 pm yesterday night just to avoid embarrassing ourselves."; Mike on the other hand said "Hopefully, the dish that is out in the end is edible." Once he said that, both Cheng Cheng and Qiao En's face became really solomn and thinking of how they will have to try out the two dishes later, they were very alert and often offered tips during the cooking process.

Mike was filming the whole yesterday morning and in the night, he had to film a magazine cover shot. In the changing of season's atmosphere, he caught a flu but still went on the show to promote the drama. His professionalism was admired by many of the crew. Before the filming, the two manly guys also practiced their dish again under the company of the production crew. To link to the drama, Mike He specially came up with "Bull, medicine or not" name for his beef related dish. Lee Wei went up with a "Bull Messy Fried Rice" dish. both dishes were liked by the main chef and it looks like the two manly guys were not only equal in their basketball skills but also in their cooking skills

As to when this episode will be shown, keep looking at the
Xing Nan Da Zhu Chu thread in the Taiwan Entertainment section.

Crazily Chases Hebe? Lee Wei: Too Exaggerated, We’re Not Close

Friday October 19, 2007 Taiwan

When the rumor about Lee Wei to be crazily chasing Hebe came out, many people have been busy trying to deny it. Yesterday, a press conference was held for their new drama "Dou Nu Yao Bu Yao", and the media was prevented from seeing them face-to-face. Through interviews, Lee Wei denies chasing Hebe.

In the drama, Lee Wei likes Hebe, but Hebe is only interested in Mike. The weird thing is that outside of filming Lee Wei is using the same way that was used to chase Chen Yi Rong (Who's that?), but never succeeded. When this was reported, Lee Wei immediately that it was very exaggerated, and the producer(?) protected him by saying "This is my fault. In order to be in their characters, I hope they will forget their names until work is over. That's it." It seems that Lee Wei is too into his character, and actually like Hebe.

Lee Wei said, "When we're filming, the atmosphere is very important. We try our best to get into character, but Hebe and I are not very close outside of filming." But yesterday during the press conference, he and Hebe were separated purposely for a period of time, with Mike in the middle. San Li told the reporters that they are only allowed to ask questions below stage, and the artists cannot go offstage to answer the questions. This seems to have (?) feel. (Is that a Taiwanese saying?)

Denies Doing Extra on Eyes

Although Mike has been filming DNYBY for the past half year, but the Taiwanese audience will see his commercials from time-to-time. Mike sometimes promotes the products he endorses to his friends, causing the companies to like him and wants to continue his contract. About the rumors of him having plastic surgery, he replies "My eyes are from my mother, didn't do anything extra."

Mike & Joe - Third Party?

Wednesday October 10 2007, Taiwan

The star Dylan Guo, whose personality is very quiet, came out the same time as Joe Cheng and Mike He, who pulled him out of his "quietness". Maybe its because not that he is playing games on the computer after work, that he is thankful for meeting such great friends.

"Even though we are always seperate filming, å‡ºåŸ , but once we have time, we will go to KTV or have a meal together. In our 'brother-relationship'there is not such thing as jealous, just encouragement. And it's really fun too. Once we all three of us went to the KTV, one waiter(ress) came by asking for an autograph. Mike asked him 'Honestly, who are you asking for an autograph. You only ask for 1, but the two of us will'嬲(?)''. This really set Joe and I off. If there really is jealousy, we wouldn't be like this saying it out loud." Dylan also joked, "Lately Mike and Joe's rumors, the newest update is that I'm the third party! Ha!This will be the news you'll know the fastest." Reporters don't believe that he changed his sexual orientation, and believes in the three 'brothers'. It doesn't matter who will become more popular, the other two will give him the best of luck.

Translator Notes:
All I can say is: Can these reporters write about something else OTHER than people's sexual orientation?
